About Fences

The Costa Mesa Playhouse is presenting the great American playwright August Wilson’s “Fences,” performing May 18 through June 9. “Fences” is the sixth in Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle, a series of ten plays which chronicle the heritage of the African-American community in the 20th century. Troy Maxson, a former star of the Negro baseball leagues, now works as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh. Excluded from the major leagues during his prime, Troy's bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and son, who now wants his own chance to play ball. Winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play.
